The New Life Comets, formerly the Arkansas Comets, recently competed in the Amateur Athletic Union State Tournament (AAU) and the Basketball Congress International State Tournament (BCI). The Comets qualified to compete in the AAU National Tournament held in Monroe, LA, on July 16 - 22 where they will receive a No. 1 seed in their pool of teams. The Comets then competed in the BCI State Championships in Conway on May 15 and 16 where they again swept the tournament beating the Lil’ Ladybacks 70-25, the Lady Rebels 55-35, and the Lady Cubs 73-48 in pool play, and in bracket play, the Arkansas Belles 66-37 in the semi-finals, and 72-52 in the finals. The first place tournament placing also allowed the Comets to qualify for the BCI National Championships held in Dallas, Texas. The Arkansas Comets will be competing in both National Tournaments as the New Life Hawks. The New Life Hawks organization’s emphasis is on the development of the individual talent of basketball players within its organization, coupled with a commitment to improve the academic standing of its athletes. The organization targets the athlete who desires to compete in high school and college. The New Life Hawks invite youth who have the athletic ability to possibly earn a college athletic scholarship with proper instruction and who have the interest in improving their academic standing in order to be eligible for a college scholarship. The New Life Hawks offers a number of programs to enhance the academic performance of its athletes. They provide an ACT Preparation Course whose purpose is to provide an intensive one-week preparation for the June ACT test which is administered nationally. They also offer guidance counseling to all of their athletes. All athletes and parents are encouraged to visit with an experienced high school guidance counselor. They also offer a summer reading program as well as a community speaker program to expose the athletes of New Life to various business, community, and civic leaders who will speak on a variety of topics to emphasize the importance of education, community involvement and issues central to the development of good character. |
